Former Afghanistan ambassador nominated to oversee government news outlets

Four of the board's nine positions are currently vacant, and two of the current members have outlasted their term but can, by law, remain until a successor takes their place.

Crocker also previously served as the ambassador to Pakistan, Syria, Kuwait and Lebanon, and as the dean of Texas A&M University's Bush School of Government and Public Service.

He will have to be confirmed by the Senate before taking a seat on the board.
