Position Overview

The Climate Action Campaign seeks a bold and innovative Campaign Director to lead a national coalition working to defend the climate progress we’ve made and to build toward ambitious pro-active federal action to address climate change. The incoming Director will have a unique opportunity to work directly with the leaders of the country’s top environmental organizations to stop the attacks on the climate, clean air and clean energy at this critical time in our country’s history.

The ideal candidate will be a recognized leader in creating and executing campaigns, developing and testing groundbreaking concepts, and challenging the norms of traditional advocacy work. Operating with a collaborative leadership style, the Director will be responsible for inspiring shared vision, action and partnership across a diverse set of stakeholders.

The Director will be an exceptional communicator who has experience running large-scale campaigns or advocacy organizations.

Client Overview

The Climate Action Campaign is a national coalition of environmental and public health groups, including the Natural Resources Defense Council, Sierra Club, The Environmental Defense Fund, and Environment America. The Coalition works to build political infrastructure for the community to further progress on solving the climate crisis.

The Director works with a deeply engaged steering committee to develop and execute a robust campaign strategy designed to build the political will to move federal policymakers. Specifically, the campaign drives political strategy, communications, and field operations across the country to create the conditions needed to change climate policy.

The Climate Action Campaign has recently finalized its three-year strategic vision and the Director will lead the coalition and staff to finalize and meet its goals by 2021. In the immediate term, the coalition goals for 2018 include:

  • Defend federal and state authority to act on climate, clean energy and clean air;
  • Grow support in Congress for climate action; and
  • Demonstrate the increasing public demand for action on climate.


 Position Responsibilities

  • Developing and running a comprehensive advocacy campaign;  
  • Serving as the principle collaborator with a steering committee of senior staff and CEOs from member organizations;
  • Providing vision and inspiring action from varied stakeholders;
  • Directing multi-state grassroots and grasstops field efforts;
  • Crafting and proposing bold strategies to move the federal politics on climate change;
  • Ensuring strong communications and collaboration amongst all campaign stakeholders;
  • Managing the campaign’s day-to-day operations including staff oversight;
  • Representing the coalition with campaign donors;
  • Providing ongoing strategic campaign advice to coalition partners and stakeholders;
  • Hiring and supervising campaign staff, vendors, consultants and other service providers;  
  • Ensuring all campaign activities adhere to state and federal regulations, compliance and reporting requirements.


The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker with outstanding leadership, management, and communication skills, including:

  • Experience managing a large-scale issue or political campaign, advocacy organization or government office;
  • Deep understanding of coalitions and how to surface, work through and resolve coalition conflicts;
  • Previous successful management of coalitions or multi-stakeholder engagements;
  • Ability to efficiently and strategically manage a diverse staff and coalition;
  • Excellent analytical skills;
  • Proven track record of successful budgeting and fundraising in a metrics-driven operation;
  • Exceptional public speaking skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in politically sensitive and high-pressure environments;
  • Capacity to work well under tight deadlines;

  • Ability to travel as needed.
