Job Description: Communications Manager

The Communications Manager is responsible for the implementation of all aspects of media and public relations for the American Humanist Association and assisting with its adjuncts. The Communications Manager reports to the Executive Director. Starting salary for this position will be in the 40-50K range dependent on experience and education.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
•Write press releases and other media outreach, handle press calls, and regularly pitch story ideas to reporters
•Draft and edit letters to the editor, opinion editorials, and articles for publications
•Monitor the news industry’s coverage of relevant humanist priorities including familiarity with broadcast, print and online outlets
•Supervise the web content manager and manage communications interns
•Promote books the AHA publishes to book reviewers and other relevant outlets
•Coordinate the use of websites, social media, ads, and other tools to promote AHA’s mission, spokespeople, accomplishments, and positions on issues
•Write and edit articles for the organization’s outreach publications, ezine and the Free Mind newsletter
•Perform other duties as assigned

• Bachelor’s degree in relevant field or commensurate experience
• At least three years of experience in nonprofit communications
• At least one year of management experience
• Ability to multi-task and initiative to discover and take-on new projects
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Strong proofreading and copyediting abilities
• Ability and interest in promoting humanist viewpoints
• Experience in drafting press releases on legal issues a plus
• An outgoing personality and public speaking capability is a plus
