American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) Council 238

For Obama EPA Transition Team:
As President Barack Obama stated in his October 20, 2008, letter to AFGE President John Gage, “The mission of the EPA is to protect the environment of the nation.  In recent years, however, the pursuit of this goal has slowed, and in some cases, has been jeopardized outright.”  AFGE Council 238 is committed to ensuring that EPA is reestablished as the nation's leader in environmental education, research and science, and regains its place as the world leader in environmental protection.  To help accomplish this, AFGE Council 238 has put together the attached White Paper for the Transition Team and now is please to share it with Congress.  To rebuild EPA, we need to:  Ensure adequate funding to hire more environmental engineers, scientists and specialists; Ensure that the Principles of Scientific Integrity will be absolute; Ensure stronger enforcement programs; Improve oversight of local, state and tribal authorities; and  Have World Class EPA Libraries.  As citizens of this great country, we should all be committed to ensuring that our children’s children have clean water, land and air, and that the health and safety of our fellow citizens, particularly children, are protected.
