The Culinary Inquisition: Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.)

Coffee or tea? “Coffee.”

Sweet or salty? “Salty.”

Favorite place to power-lunch? “Hmm. Wow. Does the Cloak Room count? It’s not my favorite, but it’s the usual one.”

Favorite restaurant in D.C.? “See, I don’t have a car here, so I usually end up going to Subway on my way home, the one right here on the corner.”

Cooking specialty? [Laughs] “I make a mean, mean, mean peanut butter and jelly sandwich — crunchy, of course.”

Favorite candy? “Wow. Candy. Probably Snickers. It’s a whole meal. It’s the heartiest of them all.”
Ever gotten food poisoning? “Yes. Yes. Yes. More than once. But not here, not in D.C.”

What is a food that you dislike? “Nothing. Nothing. I will eat anything and everything.”

If you were to invite five people to dinner, who would they be? “Winston Churchill, the most quotable human being to ever live. Ronald Reagan. Dr. [Oscar Elías] Biscet, a political prisoner in a prison in Cuba right now. Margaret Thatcher. I’m reading a biography of George Washington … called His Excellency. … He not only helped start the nation, he saved the nation. Is that four or five? And of course Mr. Renaissance, who is [Benjamin] Franklin … who would probably be the most interesting.”
