Republican presidential hopeful Rick Perry urged an evangelical audience to “do what Ronald Reagan did at the apex of the Cold War, which is to speak past the oppressors and the illegitimate rulers and directly to their people.” Perry, the governor of Texas, appeared at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va.
“It is important that [pastors] stand in the pulpit every day and defend those values, those Christian values. America is going to be guided by some set of values — the question is going go to be, whose values?” said Perry. “I believe that … it’s the Christian values that this country was based upon.”
His standing among social conservative voters is strong, but many have also raised questions about his executive order requiring an HPV vaccine for all young girls in Texas.
The Dallas Morning News reports that Liberty University Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. said of Perry, "You can't expect any candidate to be perfect."
