Napolitano: US ‘safer than it was prior to 9/11’

By Geneva Sands - 08/30/11 12:00 AM ET

Homeland Secretary Janet Napolitano said she believes the U.S. is safer than it was before the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

"I think categorically the country is safer than it was prior to 9/11. We have many layers of security in place that didn't exist before, beginning with intelligence gathering and information sharing," said Napolitano at The Christian Science Monitor breakfast Tuesday.

Napolitano also praised the post-9/11 Department of Homeland Security for it's management of FEMA and efforts in the wake of Hurricane Irene.
