The tragedy of the Aurora, Colo., shootings made Americans question their safety but also reminded them about the importance of coming together, first lady Michelle Obama said.
Obama's comments, a week after the shooting, came during an interview with ABC News in London on Friday. The first lady is in London leading the official White House delegation to the Olympics.
"It makes us all question our own safety and security but these events also remind us that this is a time we come together," Obama told ABC News. "We are at our best as a country in times of tragedy.
"That’s when we embrace each other and we forget about the divisions. And my hope is that we continue to embrace these families and other families around the country dealing with tragedies. So hopefully these Olympics will give the families something else to look at to remember why we’re all here."
Obama's comments were some of the first ones she's made publicly since the shooting, which resulted in 12 dead and dozens more injured.
