Secretary Clinton dances in Malawi

By Geneva Sands - 08/06/12 11:47 AM ET

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton got her groove on in Malawi on Sunday, putting on local garb in the capital, Lilongwe, and swaying to music during a visit with residents.

The secretary kept the moves coming after encouragement and some visual instruction from a local host, which ended in clapping and smiles all around.

"Thank you, I'm so honored," she said.

Clinton made a six-hour stop in Malawi, as part of her eleven-day Africa tour. While in the country's capital she met with Malawi President Joyce Banda, as well as embassy staff and made remarks at a number of events.

"I had a wonderful meeting this morning with your President, President Banda. And I am so proud to come to a country with a woman president, who is setting an example, who herself is a leader and a role model," said Clinton at Camp GLOW (Girls Leading Our Way) in Lilongwe, Malawi, according to remarks released by the State Department.

Clinton is the first high-ranking U.S. official to visit the southern African country since former Vice President Quayle in 1991.

"I'm here as the first Secretary of State from my country ever to visit your country, because President Obama and I believe that when Malawi stood up for democracy, when you stood up for your constitution, you showed the world something very important," she added.

Clinton's short trip seems to have been an eventful one. A swarm of bees descended on the secretary and her team as they were headed to board her plane at Kamuzu International Airport. Malawi and American officials rushed to escape the bees, while Clinton quickly boarded the plane, according to press reports.

Next Clinton heads to Johannesburg, South Africa, where she is expected to meet with former president Nelson Mandela.
