Michelle Obama talks Olympics, kiss-cam on ‘Tonight Show’

By Adele Hampton - 08/14/12 07:47 AM ET

First lady Michelle Obama dished out details on "the whole kiss-cam thing" Monday night on the "Tonight Show With Jay Leno," saying she never intended to dismiss a first attempt at a kiss from President Obama.

"I had just walked in and sat down, and I just saw my face on the Jumbotron. And I'm still a little embarrassed. I didn't see the 'kiss-cam' part, so I didn't know we were supposed to kiss," she said.

"And then Malia came over after we got booed for not kissing and she was just disgusted with us. She said, 'Why didn't you kiss?' "

Last month, the Obamas attended a U.S. Olympic men's basketball team exhibition game and were caught by the Verizon Center's "kiss-cam." Falling on the president and first lady twice during the game, the couple received boos from the crowd after what appeared to be an initial refusal from Mrs. Obama to kiss the president.

"I've arranged for you to get another chance on the kiss-cam," Malia told her parents after they missed their first chance, the first lady explained.

That second opportunity arose during the second half of the game, and when the camera came in for round two, Obama put his arm around Michelle and leaned in as the crowd cheered and chanted, "Four more years."

The first lady also talked about her time at the London Olympics, saying she enjoyed the chance to promote her "Let's Move" campaign overseas and had dreamed, when young, of one day becoming an Olympian.

Later on the show, Obama was joined by Olympic gymnastics gold-medal winner Gabby Douglas.

"Yes, I did my share of 'I can get on a beam and balance on the back of the couch,' " the first lady joked. "I would like to think I could be a gymnast, but my legs kept growing and it didn't quite work out."
