President Obama issued a stern warning to Syria on Monday,
threatening a strong U.S. response should embattled President Bashar
Assad unleash his arsenal of chemical weapons on rebel forces fighting
to overthrow the longtime Syrian leader.
The president made "absolutely clear" during a Monday speech at the National
Defense University in Washington, D.C., that the use of chemical weapons by the
Assad regime against anti-government fighters would cross a "red line"
and trigger an immediate and overwhelming response.
"The world is watching," according to Obama, in a warning directly
aimed at Assad. "There will be consequences and you will be held
accountable."
