Obama: It's 'romantic’ to spend Valentine’s Day with the press

By Jonathan Easley - 02/14/13 02:45 PM ET

President Obama on Thursday opened an education speech in Decatur, Ga., by joking about spending his Valentine's Day on the road with the White House press corps.

“I can't imagine a more romantic way to spend Valentine's Day than with all of you, all the press here,” Obama said.

The president said he already has flowers for first lady Michelle Obama, but admitted it was easier for him because he has access to the White House Rose Garden.

“I already got the gift, got the flowers — that's important,” Obama said. “I’ve got this rose garden. All these people around, keeping the flowers.”

Obama said the first lady made him promise to get back to Washington tonight in time for their date.

The romantic holiday seems to have lightened the mood among some lawmakers on Thursday as well.

Earlier in the day, Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) puckered his lips and blew a few loud kisses to reporters after a press conference. Asked by MSNBC’s Luke Russert what he had planned for his wife, Boehner said, “Same thing I got you, honey.”
