Event-crashing congressman offers political advice for ‘dumb statements’

Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) has some advice for Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) to keep in mind during his bid to win the Republican presidential nomination.

“When someone starts making such dumb statements, you don’t start digging yourself further in the hole, you try to explain it,” Rangel said about Perry’s past comments that Social Security is a Ponzi scheme.

Appearing on MSNBC’s “Politics Nation” with the Rev. Al Sharpton, Rangel continued that Perry’s explanation of those comments is “the craziest thing I’ve ever heard of.”

Rangel made a surprise appearance at a Rick Perry fundraiser Monday after hearing the governor would be appearing in the congressman’s Harlem district.
