Perry debate gaffe in focus on 'SNL'

By Geneva Sands - 11/14/11 09:56 AM ET

"Saturday Night Live" used its own brand of comedy to mock Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry's now-well-known debate gaffe.

During Wednesday's CNBC debate, Perry promised to close three government agencies when he became president, but he couldn't name all three. He repeatedly failed to name the third agency, ending the exchange with, "Sorry. Oops."

In the "SNL" parody, when pressed to name the third agency, a faux Perry says, "Come on, man. I said, ‘Oops.'

"Why is this so hard? It's up there somewhere. I can feel it dancing around. Come on. I'd know it if i heard it."

All week, late-night comedians have homed in on Perry's blunder.

Even the Texas governor himself made light of the incident. Following the debate, Perry appeared on David Letterman's show, where he delivered a "Top Ten" list of excuses for why he forgot the agency name.

Perry joked about everything from Herman Cain’s sexual harassment charges and Mitt Romney’s looks to pop artist Justin Bieber’s paternity suit in "The Late Show" skit.

Following the gaffe, Perry’s campaign has worked to control the damage. The morning after the debate, Perry appeared on all of the morning news shows to explain the incident. “I will tell you that I don’t mind saying clearly that I stepped in it last night,” Perry said Thursday on NBC’s “Today” show.
