Santorum attacks Gingrich, calls himself ‘solid, consistent conservative”

By Joshua Altman - 12/01/11 02:57 PM ET

Calling himself a “solid, consistent conservative” Thursday, former Sen. Rick Santorum (Penn.) attacks rival GOP prresidential hopehul and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (Ga.) for flip-flopping on issues important to many conservatives. Santorum listed amnesty, healthcare and global warming among those things social conservatives care about when pressed by MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchel on what issues Gingrich has changed his positions.

“The issue of global warming, we’ve seen the Rep. Ron Paul (Texas) commercial showing Rep. Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) and Newt Gingrich sitting on the couch in front of the Capitol talking about how they can work together on something most social conservatives don’t believe in -- man-made global warming,” Santorum said.

Gingrich has been the latest candidate to surge in the polls and challenge former Gov. Mitt Romeny (Mass.) for the nomination. He has positioned himself as a true conservative, saying recently, “I just claim to be a lot more conservative than Mitt Romney.”
