Stay or go? Cain to announce campaign's future on Saturday

By Justin Sink - 12/02/11 03:10 PM ET

Herman Cain will announce Saturday whether he will remain in the presidential race.

"Tomorrow in Atlanta I will be making an announcement, but nobody’s gonna get me to make that prematurely. That’s all there is to that,” Cain said at a town-hall event in Rock Hill, S.C., on Friday.

Cain said he would discuss with his wife allegations of marital infidelity and the toll the campaign was taking on his family Friday night. The former restaurant executive has not yet seen his wife in person since allegations of marital infidelity arose earlier this week.

“I’m reassessing because of all this media firestorm stuff," he said. "Why? Because my wife and family comes first, I got to take that into consideration."

The Washington Post is reporting that Cain will invite top donors and supporters to Atlanta to give them advance notice about his plans to stay in the race. The Post also quoted one supporter as saying he believes Cain is likely to announce the end to is candidacy.

"I don’t doubt the support that I have, just look at the people that are here," Cain said in South Carolina. "We got to look at what happens to contributions and we got to look at what happens, we got to reevaluate the whole strategy."

The campaign hasn't shown overt signs of winding down — Cain held his town-hall meeting in South Carolina and debuted a new website highlighting female supporters. But the candidate himself has acknowledged that repeated allegations of sexual impropriety have taken a hit on his poll numbers and finances.

“Any time you put another cloud of doubt, unfortunately, in the court of public opinion, you’re guilty until proven innocent,” Cain said in an interview Monday.

Cain has seen his once robust poll numbers erode significantly, with a Rasmussen poll released earlier this week showing him tied for third with single-digit support among likely voters. In that poll, Cain trailed Republican front-runner Newt Gingrich by 30 points.
