Obama rips GOP for blocking Cordray confirmation

By Amie Parnes - 01/04/12 03:07 PM ET

If President Obama wanted to send a message on his first domestic trip of the year, he may have achieved it.

An aggressive President Obama went on the attack Wednesday, appointing Richard Cordray to head the Consumer Financial Protection Board a day after GOP presidential front-runner Mitt Romney narrowly won the Iowa caucuses.

"When Congress refuses to act and as a result hurts our economy and puts people at risk, I have an obligation as president to do what I can without them," Obama said at a speech set at a high school in a working class Cleveland suburb.

"I will not stand by while a minority in the Senate puts party ideology ahead of the people they were elected to serve," the president continued, standing in front of Cordray and near a large White House 'We Can't Wait' sign. "Not when so much is at stake. Not at this make-or-break moment for the middle class."
