Gingrich continues Romney assault, denies insulting ‘junior partner’ Santorum

I took Romney head-on about this, because its all baloney, its his staff from the last campaign with his millionaire friends paying for it, Gingrich said. Those are his ads, he just didnt have the guts to admit it.

He has grandchildren. He ought to run a campaign worthy of his grandchildren. He ought to take these ads home and show them to his grandchildren and say, Grandpa did this. What do you think about this kind of trash on television? What do you think about someone being beat up like this on television? We should run campaigns worthy of our best, not campaigns that demean us to our worst.

And although Gingrich again insisted that he was not going to go negative on non-policy issues, he did manage a few swipes, calling the ads the kind of chutzpah you dont really expect to find in Romney.

Im running a campaign of contrast on public policy, Gingrich continued. If hed run a campaign on policy ideas, Id have stuck to that and beat him.

Gingrich — who famously predicted that he would become the GOP nominee while flying high in the Iowa polls — also said that Romney was not going to be the nominee.

As for Santorum, Gingrich insisted he wasnt trying to belittle his opponent — with whom Gingrich has suggested forming an anti-Romney alliance — in calling him his junior partner while campaigning Thursday.

“If you think of us as partners, he would clearly in historical experience have been the junior partner,” Gingrich said. “He’s not a bad person — I want to be clear about this — but I don’t know that he has any track record of being able to organize a large-scale campaign.”

Interviewed Friday, Gingrich said he meant no harm.

“I wasn’t trying to knock Rick,” Gingrich said. “I was Speaker of the House, he was a senator who wasn’t in leadership at that point.”
