Gingrich campaign launches follow-up attack slamming Romney for 'pious baloney'

By Alicia M. Cohn - 01/09/12 04:29 PM ET

Newt Gingrich's campaign launched a follow-up attack on Monday using the candidate's phrase "pious baloney" to attack GOP rival Mitt Romney.

Gingrich first used the phrase in response to Romney in last weekend's debate, telling him to stop using "pious baloney" to defend his reasons for running for office and subsequent decision not to run for reelection.

"You had bad reelection numbers," Gingrich said, bringing up Romney's failed bids for the Senate in 1994 and for the 2008 presidential nomination.

Following up on the attack, Gingrich's campaign launched the website stopromneyspiousbaloney.com. The simple website includes a fundraising link and a design featuring what appears to be a bologna sandwich.

The site also includes a video of Gingrich titled "Winning the Argument," first released last month. The video uses compiled clips of Gingrich from debates. Romney appears in the background of several of the clips but is not named, and the "pious baloney" speech does not appear.
