President Obama held a fundraiser at the historic Apollo Theater in New York City on Thursday, and being on that famous stage led him to break into song.
“To know that Rev. Al Green was here,” Obama said, before belting out a line from Green's hit "Let's Stay Together."
"I'm ... so in love with you," the president sang before pointing to his staff offstage and saying, "Those guys didn't think I would do it."
Obama held four fundraising events in New York on Thursday. The Appollo event, which featured performances by Al Green and India Arie, was open to 1,400 guests. Ticket prices started at $200.
The president told the entertainers not to worry and that he couldn't sing like them. But he did jokingly defend his performance.
"The Sandman did not come out," he said.
For comparison, below is the original singer's version, circa 1972.
