Romney: 'I served in government, but I didn't inhale'

By Geneva Sands - 02/10/12 05:15 PM ET

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney joked that he "didn't inhale" when he served in government.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney joked that he "didn't inhale" when he served in government.

The remark on Friday, which poked fun at the infamous Bill Clinton comment, drew laughs from the conservative crowd at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Washington, D.C.

"If there was a program or agency or department that needed cutting, I did it," Romney said during his speech. "That skill I learned in the private sector, and practiced for four years in Massachusetts, where by the way I served in government, but I didn't inhale. I'm still a business guy."

The joke got applause from the packed auditorium, where Romney pitched his conservative credentials at the annual gathering.

Back in 1992, then-presidential candidate Clinton said that he had experimented with marijuana, but "didn't inhale."

This wasn't the first time the former Massachusetts governor used the "inhale" line on the campaign trail. The Democratic political action committee American Bridge for the 21st Century used his numerous references in an attack video released this week.

The group, looking to capitalize on a popular Internet meme, put out the spoof titled "Sh*t Mitt Says," mocking Romney's candidacy.
