RNC campaigns against Obama on healthcare in six battleground states

By Alicia M. Cohn - 03/20/12 09:08 AM ET

The Republican National Committee (RNC) is hitting President Obama on healthcare with a new TV ad airing in six battleground states, a week before the Supreme Court hears arguments on his signature reform law.

The new RNC ad, released Tuesday, will air in the battleground states of Florida, Nevada, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia, as well as in Washington, D.C.

Obama, gearing up for reelection, has touted the passage of the Affordable Care Act as one of his first-term accomplishments.

The RNC seeks to highlight the "higher costs" of healthcare after the healthcare insurance reform bill was passed in 2009, citing surveys by the Kaiser Family Foundation. "Higher costs for patients, higher costs for taxpayers: Another broken promise by Obama," the ad’s voiceover declares.

"This fall, Americans have a chance to vote for better healthcare and more jobs by making Barack Obama a one-term president," RNC Chairman Reince Priebus said in a statement. He also doubled down on the theme in an appearance on CNN's "Starting Point" Tuesday morning, pointing out the upcoming two-year "anniversary" of the healthcare bill, which most Republicans deride as "ObamaCare."

"This is another promise that Barack Obama made that prices would go down and access would go up," he said. "And in reality, we all know that actually prices are going up. Companies are taking waivers. That ObamaCare isn’t what everyone thought it would be. And in fact it’s the opposite. And it isn’t working and it isn’t improving anything.”

The court is expected to deliver a ruling on the constitutionality of the healthcare reform bill in June, just months before the presidential election.
