Romney ad hits Obama for ‘broken promises’ on energy policy

By Meghashyam Mali - 05/03/12 09:18 AM ET

Likely GOP nominee Mitt Romney’s campaign released a new video on Thursday accusing President Obama of “broken promises” on energy policy.

The video is the latest in a series from Romney attacking Obama’s record, as the former Massachusetts governor pivots from a bruising GOP primary to the general election.

The video begins with an image of clear, blue skies with text reading “What Barack Obama promised.” It then cuts to a clip of Obama speaking at the Democratic National Convention in 2008 pledging to “invest $150 billion dollars over the next decade in affordable, renewable sources of energy: wind power and solar power and the next generation of biofuels.”

Obama says it will be “an investment that will lead to new industries and 5 million new jobs that pay well and can’t be outsourced.”

The video then switches to an image of dark skies with an onscreen graphic reading “What President Obama delivered.”

Title cards then highlight news headlines regarding the investment in failed solar firm Solyndra and of job losses in other green energy industries.

Obama’s efforts to boost renewable energy sources have come under fire from conservative groups who say the administration has failed to create jobs and has neglected to tackle high gas prices.

Americans for Prosperity, a conservative group partially funded by the billionaire Koch brothers, is launching a $6.1 million ad campaign in eight swing states attacking Obama’s green energy efforts. The ad says the administration has spent billions on renewable energy companies that have only created new jobs overseas.

The administration though has hit back. Senior White House adviser David Axelrod blasted the GOP in March, saying they were trying to “vilify” green energy and calling their policies on the issue “dangerous.”

On Monday, Romney also released an ad criticizing Obama for “broken promises” on spending and accusing him of overlooking the GSA scandal while allowing the nation’s debt to reach a record high.
