RNC ad hits Obama for ‘hype and blame’

By Jonathan Easley - 05/04/12 07:56 AM ET

The Republican National Committee (RNC) has released a new ad hitting President Obama for campaigning on “hype and blame.”

Text from the ad displays dreary economic data as then-candidate Obama gives a campaign speech in 2008 centered around his “hope and change” slogan.

“What do you do when you don’t have a record to run on?” text from the ad reads. “Hype and blame.”

As part of the messaging effort, Republicans will sell bumper stickers emblazoned with the faux slogan and accompany them with a multi-platform advertising push. The effort will focus on Virginia and Ohio, two swing states where the president will officially kick off his campaign on Saturday.

“President Obama has no record to run on, so he's out on the campaign trail resorting to the very tactics he once campaigned against,” said RNC Chairman Reince Priebus in a statement. “It's sad to see the candidate of 'Hope and Change' become the president of ‘Hype and Blame.’ Barack Obama once promised to hold himself accountable, but now he's making excuses and blaming others for his failures. The 'great uniter' has resorted to dividing the American people against each other by creating animosity and scorn to win reelection. He doesn't have a record to run on, so he's painting his opponent as someone people should run from.”
