RNC: Obama broke 'another promise' on individual mandate

By Alicia M. Cohn - 06/29/12 07:48 AM ET

The Republican National Committee (RNC) sought to turn the tables on President Obama on Friday by using the Supreme Court's ruling on his signature healthcare reform legislation against him.

"Today Democrats are celebrating another broken promise," declares the text on a new Web video released by the RNC.

The Supreme Court handed down its decision on the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as "ObamaCare," on Thursday, ruling it constitutional and upholding the most controversial part of the bill, the individual mandate, as valid under taxing authority.

But the RNC is looking to use that ruling against Obama, releasing a new video on Friday that claims Obama broke "another" promise to the American people by implementing a new tax that will hit the middle class.

"In 2008, Candidate Obama promised middle-class American families that they wouldn't see their taxes go up under his administration, yet his signature legislation did just that," said RNC Chairman Reince Priebus in a statement.

The individual mandate requires all Americans to obtain health insurance, and to pay a penalty if they do not.

Mitt Romney responded to the Supreme Court ruling by renewing a pledge to repeal the legislation as president, and the RNC quickly backed Romney as the next best chance to completely remove the bill.

"ObamaCare continues to be bad policy as healthcare costs are increasing, placing a large burden on job creators," Priebus continue in the statement. "Big Government is not the answer to healthcare reform and Americans know that new leadership is needed in the White House. As president, Mitt Romney will provide the real leadership needed to repeal ObamaCare and provide true healthcare reform."
