Rep. West releases new ad citing background as high school teacher

"I grew up in the inner city of Atlanta, where you had two choices: economic freedom or economic dependency. That is the value of a good education," West says in the ad. "It's why I became a high school teacher after retiring from the military, and it's why I won't stand by while our schools fail our children. Every child should have the equality of opportunity I did — the opportunity to live the American Dream."

The ad is the second West's reelection campaign has released.

"Because of his own experience, he knows the value of education and will continue to work in Congress to get the failing federal education bureaucracy out of the way, and put responsibility for education in the hands of teachers, parents and local school boards," West campaign manager Tim Edson said.

West, a conservative firebrand, is running for reelection in Florida's 18th district.
