Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Sunday that he no longer had any concerns about the budget framework pushed by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), Mitt Romney’s new running mate.
Gingrich, who sought the GOP presidential nomination this year, famously said in 2011 that the Ryan budget was “right-wing social engineering.”
But appearing on CBS’s "Face the Nation," Gingrich said that his main objection to last year’s Ryan budget was its treatment of Medicare – and that the Wisconsin Republican, the chairman of the House Budget Committee, had assuaged those concerns this year.
“It basically allows people to stay in the current system. So he met my only objection,” Gingrich said.
Gingrich also noted that Ryan’s new Medicare framework, which also shifts some of the program’s funding into private subsidies, was the only bipartisan proposal in town, given Ryan’s work with Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.)
But Wyden voted against Ryan’s budget when it came up in the Senate, and has said that his work with the Wisconsin Republican stopped with a policy paper – not legislation.
