The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is spending $1.1 million to run a new statewide ad that slams challenger Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.) for being out of touch with seniors on Social Security.
The ad, out on Sunday, charges Akin with being "way out of Missouri's mainstream" for backing proposals that would privatize the program. The video features a clip of an elderly man shuffling up to a punch-clock and tells viewers, 'Akin has a plan for your retirement — work longer.' "
"Outside of Missouri's mainstream" is the same argument incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.)
made in a recent ad, indicating the candidate and her party are likely to run lockstep on this attack in Missouri, and consider it to be a potent one.
Akin won the Missouri GOP Senate primary last week, defeating businessman John Brunner and former state Treasurer Sarah Steelman (R).
McCaskill faces a tough fight, with the last two public polls showing Akin ahead. Outside GOP-affiliated groups have already spent $15 million against her in the contest.
