Romney says US needs 'new coach,' promises ‘winning season again’

By Adele Hampton - 09/01/12 04:04 PM ET

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney marked the first Saturday of college football season with a jab at President Obama's economic record, telling voters it was time for America "to get a new coach".

"One of the promises [Obama] made was he was going to create more jobs, and today, 23 million people are out of work or stopped looking for work or underemployed," Romney said Saturday at a campaign stop in Cincinnati.

"Let me tell you, if you have a coach that's 0-23 million, you say it's time to get a new coach. It’s time for America to see a winning season again and we're going to bring it to them,” he continued, citing the 23 million Romney says are unemployed or have stopped looking for work.

Romney continued the theme of his nomination acceptance speech during the GOP convention, accusing the president of failing to keep his promises.

“Getting ready for my convention speech, I read some speeches from some other people who had spoken at conventions," he said. "I actually also read the inaugural speech of some of our great presidents and heroes in my life. And one of the speeches I read was the convention speech of Barack Obama.

"He was not one of the ones that I wanted to draw from, except I could not resist a couple of things he said, because he made a lot of promises. And I noted that he didn't keep a lot of promises," added Romney.

The GOP presidential candidate will attend a rally with running mate Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) in Jacksonville, Fla. this afternoon.

Ryan tailgated earlier today at his alma mater, Miami University of Ohio. Ryan’s college lost their opening day game to Ohio State University 56 to 10.
