Berkley touts herself in English ad, blasts Heller in Spanish

By Cameron Joseph - 09/12/12 09:05 AM ET

Rep. Shelley Berkley (D-Nev.) is up with two new ads, one in Spanish blasting Sen. Dean Heller (R-Nev.) for "wanting to deport undocumented students" and the other, in English, touting her push to extend unemployment benefits.

The Spanish-language ad highlights the importance of a big turnout from Hispanic voters for Berkley's campaign, while the positive English-language ad suggests her campaign may feel the need to bolster her image after a slew of GOP attacks and bad headlines over an ongoing House Ethics Committee investigation.

The ads also mark a pivot for Berkley: nearly all of her campaign messaging thus far has been focused on attacking Heller for voting twice for Rep. Paul Ryan's (R-Wis.) Medicare plan.

Berkley has narrowly trailed Heller in most public polling of the race, though Democrats have a huge advantage in the ground game in the state and President Obama's coattails are likely to help her.
