'West Wing' cast reunites in campaign video

By Alicia M. Cohn - 09/20/12 12:12 PM ET

Stars of popular political TV series “The West Wing” reunited this week to film a campaign ad for Bridget Mary McCormack, a candidate for Michigan’s Supreme Court and the sister of actress Mary McCormack.

“There’s a crisis,” declares Mary McCormack, who played deputy national security adviser Kate Harper in later seasons of the show. “It’s the voting thing.”

“People walk into the voting booth, they check the straight party ticket box and they think that they have voted for everything,” explains Bradley Whitford, who played deputy chief of staff Josh Lyman on the show. “But they haven’t. They still have to vote for the non-partisan part of the ballot.”

Michigan includes the Supreme Court candidates in the nonpartisan part of their ballots, the characters explain in the video. They then highlight McCormack’s record of “fighting for justice for ordinary people, for families with sick kids, for victims of domestic violence.”

The four-minute Web video also features actors Allison Janney, Janel Moloney, Richard Schiff, Joshua Malina, Lily Tomlin and Martin Sheen, who played President Bartlett on the show.

It is not the first time the cast has reunited to film a video tweaking real-life politics. In May, part of the cast reunited to discuss gas prices and fitness initiatives. Like that video, the pro-McCormack one features the “walk and talk” scene-setting that the Aaron Sorkin TV series was known for.
