VIDEO: Obama opens debate with anniversary wishes for Michelle

By Daniel Strauss - 10/03/12 09:14 PM ET

President Obama began his answer to the first question at the first presidential debate by wishing first lady Michelle Obama a happy anniversary.

The debate on Wednesday happened to land on the 20th anniversary of the first couple.

Obama thanked moderator Jim Lehrer, the University of Denver (which is hosting the debate) and Mitt Romney in his opening statement.

"Thank you very much Jim for this opportunity I want to thank Gov. Romney and the University of Denver for your hospitality," Obama said. "There's a lot of points I want to make tonight but the most important one is that 20 years ago I became the luckiest man on earth because Michelle Obama agreed to marry me.

"And so I just want to wish sweetie, you, a happy anniversary and let you know that a year from now we will not be celebrating this in front of 40 million people."

Romney also wished the first couple a happy anniversary.
