Big Bird weighs in on Romney debate shout-out

By Judy Kurtz - 10/08/12 11:43 AM ET

Big Bird’s feathers don’t appear to be ruffled by the buzz Mitt Romney’s mention of him created during the first presidential debate.

In a surprise appearance during the “Weekend Update” news segment on last week’s “Saturday Night Live,” the yellow, feathered “Sesame Street” fixture noted all the fuss, saying, “It’s so weird to think about — that just a few days go, I could just blend in like every other perfectly normal 8-foot talking bird.”

During last Wednesday’s debate between President Obama and GOP nominee Romney in Denver, Colo., Romney said if elected he would slash funding to PBS, home to shows such as “Sesame Street” and “PBS NewsHour.”

The former Massachusetts governor told debate moderator Jim Lehrer, who anchors “NewsHour,” “I’m sorry, Jim. I’m going to stop the subsidy to PBS. I’m going to stop other things. I like PBS, I love Big Bird, I actually like you, too.”

On Saturday’s show, "SNL" cast member Seth Meyers asked the Sesame Street resident how he found out about his debate mention.

“I got a million tweets,” he replied.

When Myers attempted to confirm that Big Bird was on Twitter, the children’s show star exclaimed, “No, I’m a bird. Tweeting is how we talk.”

Saying he didn't want to "ruffle any feathers," the never-aging fowl also neglected to make any political statements during his “SNL” cameo. He instead opted to tell a G-rated joke to Myers.

“You know who loves debates?” Big Bird asked before delivering the punchline, “De-fishes.”
