Lesley Gore, the singer behind the megahit “It’s My Party,” is rededicating her 1960s song “You Don’t Own Me” to Mitt Romney.
In a video posted Monday on YouTube, a montage of women — including “Girls” creator and star Lena Dunham, actress Natasha Lyonne and model Alexa Chung — are seen singing along to the female-friendly tune.
Political messages are interspersed throughout the clip urging women to reject the GOP presidential candidate’s policies on abortion and the Affordable Care Act.
Near the end of the video, Gore, 66, talks to the camera, saying, “I recorded ‘You Don’t Own Me’ in 1964. It’s hard for me to believe, but we’re still fighting for the same things we were then. Yes, ladies, we’ve got to come together, get out there and vote, and protect our bodies. They’re ours. Please vote.”
“You Don’t Own Me” has sold more than a million copies and gained renewed popularity after being featured in the 1996 movie “The First Wives Club.”
