Climate heckler disrupts Romney rally

By Ben Geman and Justin Sink - 11/01/12 03:13 PM ET

A protester who yelled, “Climate change caused Sandy” briefly disrupted a Mitt Romney rally Thursday.

The man was tossed out of the event outside Richmond, while the pro-Romney crowd chanted “U-S-A! U-S-A!”

Romney paused his speech while the man, who had a sign reading “End climate silence,” was removed from the Doswell, Va., event. But the GOP nominee did not acknowledge the protester.

“What about climate? That's what caused this monster storm,” the protester yelled.

A number of climate change activists have used the phrase “climate silence” to criticize the topic’s low profile in the 2012 presidential campaign.

Environmentalists, including Al Gore, and a number of scientists are highlighting links between extreme weather and climate change in the wake of Hurricane Sandy’s destructive path up the East Coast.

Climate experts warn that warmer ocean waters and greater atmospheric moisture are fueling the power and precipitation of big storms, and that rising sea levels are making coastal impacts worse.
