Bloomberg super-PAC renews attack on pro-gun rights Illinois Democrats

By Daniel Strauss - 02/15/13 09:13 AM ET

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's (I) super-PAC is out with a new ad attacking both former Rep. Debbie Halvorson (D-Ill.) and Illinois State Sen. Toi Hutchinson (D) on gun control.

The Independence USA ad released Friday, instead, praises former Cook County Administrator Robin Kelly (D). All three are running for the Chicago congressional seat vacated with the resignation last November of former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D).

"In the race for Congress, the big issue: fighting gun violence. Debbie Halvorson and Toi Hutchinson both earned an 'A' from the NRA. They can't be trusted," the ad's narrator says. "The clear choice: Robin Kelly."

The ad was released the same day President Obama is set to deliver a speech on gun control in Chicago in his hometown Hyde Park. During his State of the Union address on Tuesday, Obama called on Congress to pass legislation introducing universal background checks for gun purchasers. Obama also said there should be a vote on an assault weapons ban.

"Kelly will join President Obama to take on the NRA for effective background checks and a ban on deadly assault weapons," the narrator continues.

The ad ends calling Kelly a "champion in the fight against gun violence."

The Democratic primary for the special election is Feb. 26.
