Cuccinelli has focused on softening his image as well, and while the hardline conservative hasn't shifted on issues, polls showed he might have been making some strides on that front. But this past weekend the state GOP nominated a pastor who's made controversial remarks over gays and abortion in the past to be his running mate, which could complicate Cuccinelli's ability to appeal to centrists.
