Hill reporter Erik Wasson told C-SPAN's "Washington Journal" on Monday that the biggest battle facing Congress before the holiday break is the fight over extending the payroll tax cut.
"The payroll tax extension remains unresolved and although they're looking to get out of town at the end of the week, Eric Cantor, the majority leader, sent out a notice that work could go on further … so I think the payroll tax extension is the big item of the week," said Wasson on C-SPAN Monday morning.
Wasson also discussed the effect that Congress's low approval ratings could have on reelection efforts.
"I think there is an increasing amount of worry about anti-incumbent feeling. I think it's now clocked in at the highest on record and that's got to hurt everybody," Wasson said.
He told C-SPAN that if Congress were to face another shutdown crisis, both Democrats and Republicans would suffer politically.
