Gov. Walker: 'I cringed' at Clint Eastwood's speech

By Geneva Sands - 08/31/12 08:25 AM ET

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) on Friday blasted the performance of Clint Eastwood during his star turn on the final night of the Republican National Convention, saying he "cringed" during the actor's ad-libbed remarks.

Walker praised the personal and charitable stories told about Mitt Romney earlier in the evening on Thursday — and said he would have preferred more about the Republican candidate's biography to Eastwood's speech during the convention finale.

"You hear some of his [Romney's] opponents [saying] how he's a robot, he's mechanical — no, he's just a private person who does amazing things and we saw some of that last night. I just wish, frankly, I would have rather seen that than Clint Eastwood during the prime time," said Walker on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

The Wisconsin governor said he was expecting to hear something similar to Eastwood's much-talked-about appearance in a Super Bowl ad for Chrysler, when the star praised the U.S. auto industry.

"Overall, at a convention, that one moment, which I cringed about … I think in the big picture, though, the rest of it was amazing," he said.

Walker told MSNBC that regardless of Eastwood's speech, he thought the convention was a success for Romney and the party.

Walker, who survived a statewide recall election in June, addressed the GOP convention Tuesday.

He also weighed in on the strategy Romney needs to win Wisconsin in the general election. Walker encouraged the GOP nominee to present himself as a reformer and spend more time campaigning in the state.

"He's not going to be an eloquent orator like the president. I mean, the president is an eloquent and gifted orator. He's [Romney is] a fix-it guy. If he can come in and say, 'I'm the guy that's going to reform the economy, I'm the guy that's going to reform your life, I'm the guy that's going to fix things and get things moving again,' that could work," said Walker.

Walker also praised the choice of hometown Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) as the Republican vice presidential running mate, saying it helps Romney's chances in Wisconsin and the Midwest.
