House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) told his constituents and reporters that federal money spent to repair earthquake damage will be offset by cost-cutting elsewhere.
"When there is a disaster there is an appropriate federal role. And we will find the monies. But we've had discussions about these things before and those monies will be offset with appropriate savings or cost cutting elsewhere," said Cantor in a press conference Wednesday.
Mineral, Va. was the town closest to the epicenter of Tuesday's 5.8 magnitude earthquake and is located in Cantor's congressional district.
Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell (R) and Cantor spoke at the news conference together and previously toured Mineral to assess earthquake damage.
Cantor was in Israel at the time the earthquake hit and and flew back to the U.S. after he received the news.
