Democrat says GOP leaders secretly oppose payroll tax extension

Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vt.) said Wednesday that the Republican strategy to extend the payroll tax cut is based on their leaders’ opposition to the measure.

“Mr. Boehner and Mr. McConnell oppose it but they can’t say that directly,” Welch said on MSNBC’s Martin Bashir program “So what they’re doing is loading up the bill with things that allow them to get their side to vote for something other than the tax cut in effect, with the hope that they’ll kill it all together.”

The Republican-controlled House passed an extension of the payroll tax cut Tuesday night that Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid (Nev.) said has no chance of passing in the upper chamber.
