Pelosi ‘optimistic’ about avoiding shutdown

With the government's funding running out at midnight Friday, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) said Thursday that she is “optimistic that there will not be a government shutdown.”

Representatives from both parties have been working out a deal that would avoid a partial government shutdown starting on Saturday, and the House plans to vote on a bill Friday that would fund the government through the end of the fiscal year.

Leaders have also been working extending the payroll tax cut which expires on December 31 for another year, a measure which many democrats want resolved before Congress breaks for the holidays.
