GOP lawmaker: Administrtation not serious in dealing with Iran

By Joshua Altman - 02/27/12 07:50 PM ET

House Intelligence Committee chairman Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) said Monday that the Obama administration's support of sanctions shows “they are not serious about a real military consequence to Iran moving forward with it’s nuclear program.”

Rogers, back from a recent trip to Israel, says he believes the Israelis “are going to have to make a decision based on what’s good for their national security interests aside from what they think might be good for the United States.”

The prospect of a unilateral Israeli strike against Iranian nuclear facilities has been discussed in recent weeks in Israel, with the Israelis dismissing U.S. warnings over such an attack.

While not supporting the Obama administration's policies of waiting for sanctions to take effect, Rogers said there is a place for sanctions in preventing Iranian nuclear proliferation.

“This would better be done with rolled-up sanctions, really tighten them up fast, don’t wait ‘till July, crank everything down, continue to put pressure on the [Iranians] and have a real option of military consequence for Iran,” Rogers said.
