House Democrats chanted "work, work, work" in response, and the refrain is heard at the end of Pelosi's video. The video includes criticism from both Democrats and media pundits about the decision to take the scheduled break — with some calling it a "vacation" — when the tax and spending issues of the "fiscal cliff" remain unresolved
The House voted on Thursday to conduct pro forma sessions during the break, rather than officially adjourning. Pro forma sessions mean the chamber meets every few days, but no work is conducted.
House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) has promised to reconvene the House during the recess if the Senate passes legislation to extend all the George W. Bush-era tax rates and stop the sequestered defense cuts set to begin in 2013.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) lashed out in response, accusing Republicans of wasting time on "empty, political show votes" — an accusation Pelosi repeats in the Web video.
