Boehner calls for moment of silence for deaths of US officials in Libya

By Pete Kasperowicz - 09/12/12 02:26 PM ET

The House held a brief moment of silence Wednesday afternoon to mark the death of U.S. Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens, who was killed along with three other officials after the embassy was attacked and set on fire.

The tribute was marked by an appearance by House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), who spoke briefly before asking everyone to stand silent in the House.

"Last night, Americans received a jolting reminder that freedom remains under siege by forces around the globe who relish violence over free expression, and terror over democracy," Boehner said. "The chairman asks all present to rise and observe a moment of silence in honor of Ambassador Stevens and American personnel killed in Libya."
