Rep. Paul Broun (R-Ga.), who is running unopposed in his district this year, said in a late September speech that evolution and other science-based theories are "lies straight from the pit of hell" that are meant to distract people from the teachings of the Bible.
Broun spoke on Sept. 27 at the Liberty Baptist Church in Georgia, and his remarks were videotaped and posted on YouTube.
"God's word is true. I've come to understand that. All that stuff I was taught about evolution and embryology, the Big Bang theory — all that is lies straight from the pit of hell," Broun said.
"And it's lies to try to keep me and all the folks who are taught that from understanding that they need a savior."
Broun also said he believes there is evidence to back up the story in the Bible that God created the Earth relatively recently.
"You see, there are a lot of scientific data that I found out as a scientist that actually show that this is really a young Earth," he said. "I don't believe that the Earth is but about 9,000 years old. I believe that it was created in six days as we know them. That's what the Bible says."
Broun also said he sees the bible as a "handbook" that tells people how to live, as well as how members of Congress should act and vote.
