Issa slams Kerry for hypocrisy on spending

By Justin Sink - 01/25/13 10:49 AM ET

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) on Friday said Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) should look in the mirror before chastising Congress about the deficit.

Kerry, testifying at his confirmation hearing for secretary of State, suggested that for America to lead internationally, it should resolve looming economic questions at home.

"Foreign policy is economic policy," he said. "It is urgent that we show people in the rest of the world that we can get our business done in an effective and timely way."

Issa, appearing on "Fox and Friends," said Kerry was criticizing the Republicans in Congress over "something he is, in fact, an architect of."

"It's a little bit like somebody killing their parents and then claiming to be an orphan," Issa said. "He certainly has had an opportunity to bring forward a budget or bring up the Ryan budget. He's been in a leadership position. He's leaving the Senate without fiscal responsibility. They are the ones that haven't passed a budget in over 1,000 days and counting."

The comment Friday was not the first time Issa has likened an Obama appointee to someone who murders his parents. In June, Issa compared Attorney General Eric Holder to the notorious Menendez brothers. Holder had dismissed a contempt-of-Congress vote spearheaded by Issa over the "Fast and Furious" gunrunning program as "reckless," and accused Republicans of chasing "truly absurd conspiracy theories" that were "unsupported by fact" to score political points.

"Well, the attorney general was a little bit like, if you remember the Menendez brothers who killed their parents, and then if they claimed they were orphans it would have been equally genuine," Issa told Fox News's Greta Van Susteren.

Lyle and Erik Menendez asked for leniency after being convicted of the brutal murder of their parents because they were now orphans.
