Boehner on Obama quip: 'So much for the charm offensive'

By Justin Sink - 03/20/13 01:54 PM ET

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said Wednesday that President Obama was undercutting his recent outreach efforts when he told Israeli leaders "it's good to get away from Congress."

"So much for the charm offensive," Boehner said with a laugh to CNN.

The president made the remark when he was greeted in Tel Aviv Wednesday morning by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He's spent recent weeks courting congressional Republicans, including multiple trips to Capitol Hill, a lunch at the White House with House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and dinner at a Washington hotel with a dozen GOP senators.

Boehner went on to say that the passing remark did not really have an impact on negotiations and that the occasional swipe "comes with the territory."

"I’d rather be heckled than ignored," Boehner said. "Or as I like to say, you only tease the ones you love."
