Actress Daryl Hannah was arrested outside the White House Tuesday afternoon. The environmental activist was taking part in an ongoing protest against the Keystone XL oil pipeline. She was taken away by Park Police after refusing repeated requests to move, reported NBC Washington.
"Sometimes it's necessary to sacrifice your freedom for a greater freedom," Hannah told NBC in Lafayette Park before her arrest. "And we want to be free from the horrible death and destruction that fossil fuels cause, and have a clean energy future."
This was part of an ongoing protest effort that began Aug. 20. The controversial proposed pipeline would link Canada’s oil sands projects to Gulf Coast refineries.
Tar Sands Action, the group organizing the protests, said around one hundred protesters including Hannah were arrested Tuesday. Hundreds more have been arrested over the past weeks.
Last week Capitol Hill opponents of the proposed Keystone XL oil sands pipeline attacked the State Department’s finding that the proposed project will cause minimal environmental harm if managed properly.
The Obama administration plans to make a final decision on the pipeline by the end of the year.
