Mayor Bloomberg: Terror threat is credible, but not corroborated

By Geneva Sands - 09/08/11 11:16 PM ET

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said federal authorities have received "credible" information that terrorists may be planning an attack in the coming days.

"As we approach the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, the NYPD, FBI and entire intelligence community have been on heightened alert because we know terrorists view the anniversary as an opportunity to strike again. Now the threat at this moment has not been corroborated. I want to stress that. It is credible, but it has not been corroborated," said Bloomberg at a press conference Thursday night.

The New York City police department is deploying additional security measures to keep the city safe, said Bloomberg.

Bloomberg said the threats must be taken seriously. He called on citizens to remain vigilant and report anything they see that is suspicious or dangerous to law enforcement.

He told New Yorkers that they do not need to change their daily routines.

Bloomberg said the best way to fight terrorism is "refuse to be intimidated by it."

"For ten years we have not allowed terrorist to intimidate us. We have lived our lives without fear and we will continue to do so," said Bloomberg.
